Civil Service Commission

The Civil Service Commission is a Three (3) member board, appointed by borough council, with each member serving a 6 year term.

The Commission meets in a public session and is responsible for:

  • Creating and monitoring rules and policies for the City's civil service
  • Testing and certifying individuals in classified service
  • Managing and maintaining civil service records

Police Officer - Full Time - Nazareth Borough Police Department, Northampton County, Pennsylvania

The Borough of Nazareth is accepting applications for the position of Full Time Patrol Officer. This is a Civil Service position. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 21 years of age and possess a high school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma. At the time of application, each applicant must either possess an Act 120 training certificate from the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission or be currently enrolled as a cadet at a certified municipal police academy in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

As part of the Civil Service process, candidates are required to pass written, oral, fitness, and polygraph examinations. Candidates must be physically capable of performing the essential functions and tasks of a police officer. Candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation.

By the time of appointment, every applicant must possess a valid PA Driver's License, successfully complete an Act 120 Academy, and be capable of MPOETC certification.

A candidate hired for the position of Full Time Patrol Officer will receive a hiring bonus of $5,000. The bonus payment shall be included with the officer’s first payroll following employment and is subject to a graduated 3-year reimbursement agreement.

Application packets can be obtained at the Nazareth Municipal Office, located at 134 S. Main Street, Nazareth, PA 18064, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, or downloaded from the Borough website (nazarethboroughpa.gov) by accessing the Civil Service Information tab on the Home Page, located in the lower left column.

Completed applications may be hand-delivered or mailed to the Nazareth Borough Municipal Office. Emailed applications will not be accepted. Applications must be received by the end of the business day on Monday, March 23, 2026. The Borough will not accept application packets delivered in person or by mail after the application deadline has passed.

The written examination will be administered at the Nazareth Regional Ambulance Corps Building (training room - rear entry), 519 Seip Avenue, Nazareth, PA 18064 on Saturday, March 28, 2026 beginning at 8:45 am. Candidates must bring an ID and pen.

The fitness test is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2026, beginning at 11:30 am. The exam will be held at the Nazareth Middle School, located at 94 Friedenstahl Avenue, Nazareth, PA.

Applicants who pass the written and oral examinations will be emailed additional documents required for participation in the next level of the hiring process.

Basic Requirements:

Successful candidates are required to pass written, oral, fitness and polygraph examinations, a comprehensive background check, and must be physically capable of performing the essential functions and tasks of a police officer

Police Officer Written Test:
Nazareth Borough uses The National Police Officer Selection Test (POST) tests entry level police officers on four components: arithmetic, reading comprehension, grammar and report writing. The tests have been developed by Stanard & Associates specifically for law enforcement agencies to assess incident report writing skills and predict training and job success. The test takes 75 minutes to complete and is proctored by members of the civil service commission and includes volunteer monitors. Applicant/candidates must score a minimal passing score of 70 on written test.

Police Officer Physical Fitness Ability Test:

Oral Interview:
The oral Interview will consist of a group of three experienced Law Enforcement professionals asking prearranged and standardized questions relating to police performance and decision making. Oral Interviews are scheduled one (1) hour apart giving the examiners enough time to thoroughly evaluate a candidate. Applicant/candidates must score a minimal passing score of 70 on the oral interview.
